The Best Kind Of Magic Can’t Be Forced

There’s a magic moment when a new trivia host breaks through the nervousness and connects with a team. Sometimes it’s because they are so sweet… and sometimes it’s because they won’t stop screaming requests for Disney Songs in between questions. I’ll let you guess which of the two led me to The Friends United in Common Knowledge.

It’s a fact not often mentioned that there are three “trivia years” for every one regular year (something to do with the quantum dynamics of time standing still while fun things are happening). So, the fact that the team currently known as Friends United in Common Knowledge has been playing together for over four years means that they have been in the Last Call Trivia world forEVER.

The core members of the team, Tony, Adam, Bryan and our own Matt Hook, started playing together at the much missed Cock and Bull in Hyde Park in 2011. I met them shortly after my very first show at MVP’s. They’ve also made regular trivia homes at Next Chapter and Friendly Stop. Over the years they’ve welcomed other members (including this girl) into the groping welcoming arms of their team, with over 10 members playing at different times, four of whom have gone on to become hosts.

I sat down with them last week to talk with the core members about their experiences with trivia:

LS: What do you like best about Last Call Trivia?

Tony: Proving that we’re smarter than everyone else.
Adam: Trying the food at all the different places we play.
Tony: Also meeting new people. (He means me, I assume.)

LS: What’s your favorite memory of playing with Last Call?

Matt: Winning the 2014 Spring League by betting 0 on the final. We’ve made it to the semi-finals every season since starting and have continued to the finals every season but two.
Tony: Plus, we’ve pitched a perfect game, twice. (Apparently, that mean’s they’ve gotten a perfect score. Sports analogies. Who knew?)
Matt: Once, when we were playing under the team name ‘Vajazzeled’ our name was the answer to a question. How often does that happen!?

LS: Tell me about your team names. I’ve noticed from the start that you like to make hosts blush.

Matt: Remember that time you didn’t know what Mike Hunt for President meant? (I’m not sure how to type my angry glare, use your imagination).
Matt: One of our favorite parts is our clever team names. They’re usually pretty dirty; if you put them in the blog you’ll lose your PG-13 status. We take great pride in being clever. If you every play against us we want you to laugh when you hear our name.

And now you know a little bit more about Friends United in Common Knowledge -or whatever their name is. Next time you see them at a Last Call show, shout your favorite Disney song at them. They’ll love that. 😉
