3 Quotes That Will Change Your Life

You likely remember Baz Luhrmann’s “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)” song that dominated the inspirational airwaves in 1999… I often say my dream is to be one of those “most interesting 40-year-olds” he talks about. In fact, much of my worldview is dominated by inspirational quotes from movies, music, and sports, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.

I will dispense some of these quotes now.

vince lombardi
Vince Lombardi

“Winning is a Habit.” – Vince Lombardi

Green Bay’s legendary coach won two Super Bowls with his hard-knock, no-nonsense approach to the game of life. Lombardi preached that in order to win you have to do things “right all the time.”

If Lombardi were a trivia player, he’d be the guy arguing that the team didn’t win by enough points every week. Lombardi’s career coaching record 136-96 over ten seasons.

Knute Rockne

“Win one for the Gipper.” – Knute Rockne

Rockne, the Notre Dame coach and early advocate of the forward pass, unleashed this gem (Apparently these were the last words of Notre Dame football great George Gipper) during halftime of a 1928 game against Army, leading his Fighting Irish to victory. Rockne’s 13-year coaching record boasts an impressive 105-12-5 that includes three recognized national championships.

On trivia night, Knute would be the guy who refuses to turn in wrong answers until the song ends.

good will hunting
Good Will Hunting

“So call her up, Romeo.” – Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting

Williams’ “Idiosyncrasies” speech to Matt Damon about the funny little things you can learn about someone when you aren’t afraid to let down your guard was so inspiring to me, I got on the phone and called the future “Mrs. Dice” up for a date. How ‘bout them apples?

At trivia, Williams would be the best teammate, because win or lose, he’s making sure everyone in the venue is having a great time! [Bonus quotes: Williams for “Carpe Diem” from Dead Poet’s Society and Damon for his Invictus speech.]

Always remember Trivia Teams, be inspired to take the “fork in the road” (Yogi Berra), give “100% effort…win or lose” (Gordy Howe), and know that we at Last Call Trivia “…hope you have the time of your life” (Green Day).
